Fabric Guide
Alcantara: A unique 68% polyester and 32% Polyurethane ultramicrofibre, non-woven fabric combining aesthetic appeal with exceptional comfort, warmth, durability and easy maintenance.
British Wool Tweed: Using only pure wool fibres from the British Isles, this cloth offers strength and durability with a rugged appearance for the toughest of environments.
Cashmere: Cashmere wool is a fibre obtained from Cashmere goats. The word cashmere derives from an old spelling of Kashmir, northern India and is fine in texture, strong, light, and soft. Garments made from it provide excellent insulation. Cashmere is characterized by its fine, soft fibres. It provides natural light-weight insulation without bulk. Fibres are highly adaptable and easily spun into yarns and light to heavy-weight fabrics. The original natural colours of cashmere wool are grey, brown and white before dyeing.
Duralinen: Coated linen with a textured look. PU coating gives waxy, wet look and a casual, worn appearance.
Duracotton: A machine washable, cotton fabric with a water-resistant wax effect resin coating.
Endurance: Barbour Endurance is made from a Cordura® based fabric. An abrasion resistant, air textured, high technology Nylon fibre engineered for durability, strength, lightness and easy care. Even the lightest Cordura® fabric has two times the abrasion resistance of comparable standard air textured Nylon. It has the versatility to be used as a stand-alone fabric or mixed with Cotton or Wool fibres (depending on the design) to produce a more natural feel and flexibility. Combining the Barbour Endurance face fabric with a waterproof and breathable drop liner provides a garment construction that enables styling and design detail to be readily incorporated without compromising functionality with endless seam sealing of the outer fabric. The Barbour Drop Liner system utilises a hydrophilic laminate, which is completely waterproof yet highly breathable and windproof keeping you dry, warm and comfortable. It is fully machine washable at 30°C.
Featherweight Waterproof Breathable: Barbour's new waterproof breathable Featherweight garments are made from a high density weave 100% polyester with a waterproof laminated membrane.
Flyweight 4oz Barbour Sylkoil wax: This brand new fabric is Barbour's lightest waxed cotton since 1894, yet its specially woven high density cotton base means that it retains all traditional durability and weatherproof qualities. Garments are at least 30% lighter than the 6oz equivalent.
Goretex: Fabrics that are totally waterproof but ‘breathable’. They are created by laminating a special membrane to variety of high-performance textiles, then sealing them with an innovative solution for guaranteed waterproof protection. The membrane contains over 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are approximately 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times bigger than a molecule of moisture vapour. So whilst water droplets cannot penetrate the membrane, moisture vapour from the body (a gas) can easily escape.
International: A range of men’s, women’s and children’s retro jackets inspired by Barbour’s vintage motorcycle heritage.
Liberty Print: These Barbour lady’s jackets feature classic print linings by Liberty of London, the iconic English store which has been a forerunner in style, sophistication and ‘avant garde’ for over 100 years. As Time Out magazine says. “Liberty is an experience to savour…a perfect clash of innovation, tradition and English eccentricity.”
Merino Wool: A luxurious, warm, natural fibre from the Merino Sheep.
Microfibre: Fibres made using microfibre technology, which weigh less than 1.0 denier. The fabrics made from these extra-fine fibres provide gentle drape and are incredibly soft. Comparatively, microfibres are two times finer than silk, three time finer than cotton, eight times finer than wool, and one hundred times finer than a human hair. Currently, Barbour uses two types of microfibres - nylon and polyester.
Moleskin: Soft, warm yet strong 100% Cotton fabric used primarily in trousers and jackets.
Polyester: An extremely strong, synthetic fibre that is resistant to abrasion. It does not crease easily and maintains its shape well. It dries quickly and is warmer to wear than cotton. Often blended with cotton to improve crease resistance and drying time.
Polyamide (Nylon): An extremely strong, abrasion resistant fibre. It resists creasing well, dries quickly, but is cool to the touch, offering specific enhanced properties.
Polarequilt: Quilted jackets with a fleece internal lining.
Soft Cotton: 100% finely brushed cotton twill.
Sylkoil Wax: A traditional waxed Thornproof fabric with a dry and aged finish. Sylkoil wax is traditional unshorn wax. The cotton comes straight from the loom and is dyed and waxed. The natural imperfections of weave are reflected in the rich variations of colour and finish. Very popular due to its lack of ‘waxy’ odour and dry feel. It is soft, flexible and non-sticky oil proofed natural Cotton that drapes superbly, bringing extra workability to the tailoring and cut, and gives more comfort and style to the wearer. It is available in heavy or medium weight finishes.
Thornproof Wax: A lustrous wax with deep colour and even touch. Barbour Wax Cotton materials are all manufactured exclusively to Barbour’s own unique specification. The material is made from finest 100% Cotton and is treated with special oil and wax to ensure it is totally wind and waterproof. It is available in heavy or medium weight finishes and can easily be re-proofed.
Tweed: Using only pure wool fibres from the British Isles, this cloth offers strength and durability with a rugged appearance for the toughest of environments. It is made in either plain or twill weave, and may have a check or herringbone pattern. Subdued, interesting colour effects are obtained by twisting together differently coloured woollen strands into a two- or three-ply yarn. Tweeds are desirable for informal outerwear, being warm, moisture-resistant and very durable. Tweeds are commonly worn for outdoor activities such as shooting and hunting, in both Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Waterproof Breathable Drop Liners: A Barbour Drop Liner is applied to the inside of a garment to provide a waterproof and breathable lining. This lining is independent of the outer fabric and provides a garment construction that enables styling and design detail to be readily incorporated without compromising functionality with endless seam sealing of the outer fabric. The Barbour Drop Liner system utilises a hydrophilic laminate applied to a woven Barbour Tartan Polyester fabric for aesthetic qualities, which is completely waterproof yet highly breathable keeping you warm, dry and comfortable.
Waxed Leather: Natural Cow hides which have been trated with protective wax treatment.
Waxed silk: Made from pure natural silk, this unique and luxurious weatherproof fabric has been re-introduced from the Barbour archive. Pure silk is proofed with oil and waxes to provide the lightest drape, yet with durable protection from the elements.
Wool - Duffle Coats & Reefer Jackets: 70% wool mix fabric is woven at the foot of the Italian Apennine Mountains from fine yarns which are then steamed to create a truly weatherproof finish that is warm, wind resistant and will retain its good looks for years. Each panel is individually hand pressed during the tailoring process in England and the whole coat is given a final hand pressing to create that unique look that comes only from the very best coats.
Wool: Luxurious, warm, natural fibre from sheep. It is warm to wear, but does not naturally dry quickly. Many yarn types and blend are available. It is also used to produce felted, worsted fabrics. Merino wool is very fine, soft wool from the Merino sheep.
