Are we automatically programmed to sort things out in spring? I must say I always seem to get the urge to tidy up my life about this time, sorting out the untidiness with which I was happy to live throughout the winter. I’ve got a couple of projects on my agenda that I’m raring to get started, and, looking round the house and garden, I’m suddenly noticing things which need cleaning, painting, fixing, trimming, or just generally sorting.
This morning, peering blearily into the shaving mirror, I noticed that my hair was akin to that of Mick Jagger circa 1965 – not a good look for a wrinkly, though Jagger seems to get away with it! So I set out to the barber’s and bravely instructed him to effect a No.6 clipper cut. 20 minutes later, encircled by a pile of silver grey locks, I consulted the mirror a second time this day and, although no mercurial reduction in years had been realised, I had achieved a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’,and left the hair emporium with a virtual spring in my step.
I say virtual spring in my step as I have been latterly afflicted with a rather sore toe and any springing has been necessarily simulated rather than real. This painful hurt had also curtailed my hill-walking and I am feeling woefully deprived without being able to get up on the tops to see the good earth coming to life anew. A visit to the local quack, who surprised me by not subjecting me to the lancet or prescribing some sort of poultice, merely sent me off with a course of antibiotics which, I have to confess, have reduced both pain and swelling such that I can now get my boots on. So I’ll be venturing tentatively into the countryside any day now, and, if I don’t succumb to terminal trench foot, I’ll be fine.
Not for the first time in these musings I seem to have strayed ‘off-message’, so returning to my headline theme of spring cleaning, we are having a bit of a sort-out at Country Attire too. As the seasons progress in the clothing retail industry it is inevitable to have a few items left over from preceding periods, and so it is at the moment.
