America: 4 More Years - seems like the election lasted longer than the administration!
I’ve been watching the American election over recent months and I’m gratified that two things have happened: (a) that the whole damn thing is over, and (b) that US national common-sense has prevailed and thankfully the only candidate with a hope in hell of saving America has been elected.
But this is what really gets me; the term of office of an American president is four years, so please tell me why, with the country on its economic knees, they spend the last two years of that term wasting vital time and billions of dollars on their puerile election process? Here is a country with a current national deficit of $16,000,000,000,000 (Let me spell that out - that’s 16 trillion dollars!!!), yet both the Republican and Democratic parties actually spend billions of dollars (Big number again, at least $1,000,000,000) on this bizarre and unedifying spectacle of muck-raking and negativity witnessed over recent months. The American people are apparently utterly sick of the process, so am I and so they should be, and who can blame them?
General Elections in the UK not perfect by any means, many criticisms could well be levelled at them too, but compared to this US circus they are a paragon of efficiency, economy and clarity. UK Parliamentary terms cannot exceed five years and the incumbent government will, toward the end of that time, dissolve parliament and nominate a date, never more than four weeks hence, when the election will take place. The process is simple, gives ample time for political debate and campaigning, and vitally keeps the interest and stimulation of the electorate, without costing ridiculous amounts of money.
A quote from the un(mitt)igated disaster that fortunately the US electorate turned down...
"I believe in an America where millions of Americans believe in an America that's the America millions of Americans believe in. That's the America I love." –Mitt Romney (January 2012)
Things need to change in the USA – and fast! They have, with the re-election of President Obama, their final chance of embracing change in an inclusive new order which will drag this woefully divided country into the 21st century. One key thing they could try is electoral reform by cutting right back on their ludicrous two year election extravaganza. Don’t get me wrong; America is still a great country; without doubt still the leader of the free world, but as such it must lead by example. The historic profligacy of so many aspects of their national behaviour with energy, food, pollution and resources must stop, and they, as a nation, must raise their heads from egocentric contemplation of their own back yard and see what the rest of the world is doing.
It is true that less than 25% of US citizens own a passport, compared to around 75% passport ownership in the UK. These two figures are interesting but not in themselves conclusive. Americans simply do not have the same geographic access to an array of adjacent countries as we do in Europe, and they already have a big, beautiful country of their own in which to travel, explore and holiday. None-the-less, as that great American writer, Mark Twain once said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness,” a considerably wider interest in foreign travel and exposure to new ideas would do them no harm whatsoever - and preferably not on a gigantic cruise ship where they simply haul a mobile America around with them, with little exposure to the real places they visit.
America has so many virtues and a lengthy record of altruism and aid that we in Europe would do well never to forget. US involvement in the freedom and constitution of today’s Europe can never be overstated, and their cultural, medical, scientific and engineering influence on the world has been unparalleled and for the most part welcomed.
But here’s the point – In order to survive, recover and prosper America can never stop. The position of Leader of the Free World has not been abdicated; it’s just that America has recently been distracted by a daft tradition of electoral ‘Hoo Haa’ which is now well past its sell-by date……Find a new way America!
