The Wimbledon Catwalk

Wimbledon - Centre Court

Anyone for tennis?

Wimbledon; the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament begins next week so we are delving into the world of Wimbledon fashion.

The quintessentially British event is famous for showcasing clothing which pairs function with fashion to allow players to express their individual style by stretching the boundaries of the official dress code imposed by Wimbledon which stipulates that players must wear ‘predominantly white’. In theory, this leaves little room for creative flair, yet competitors including Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams manage to showcase their individuality by wearing unique designs which stand up to the demands of intense physical activity whilst allowing their personal style to be exhibited.

The official Wimbledon Collection, designed by Ralph Lauren represents the elegance and sophistication of British tennis and highlights the importance of fashion as a significant part of the event. The ‘Tennis-Chic’ look is one which has transpired onto the catwalk via the Sports Luxe trend which featured significantly in the spring/summer 2013 collections of designers including Paul Smith and Nicole Farhi. Tennis dresses and shorts with neon trims, mesh panels and flashes of bold colour were key aspects, creating a fusion of sport and fashion.

If full on tennis whites are not your cup of tea, try monochrome. Take inspiration from the spring/summer 2013 collections of Valentino and Stella McCartney by pairing Wimbledon White with Classic Black to provide a sophisticated look worthy of Centre Court.
