The nautical trend is one which is almost guaranteed to make an appearance on the spring/summer catwalks and this year is no exception. Stripes are a clear choice when considering nautical style, as is a classic colour palette of navy and white with accents of red. The Breton stripe is an iconic design which originated from the uniform of French sailors in the 1800s. The design was later adopted by Coco Chanel in her 1917 Nautical Collection which further adds to the French connotations of the design. Today, nautical inspired clothing can be found everywhere, from high street stores to high fashion catwalks, providing an accessible trend which has timeless appeal.

Here are some suggestions for achieving the nautical look:

Arguably the most famous showcase of nautical style is Royal Henley Regatta, one of the most established and coveted sporting events of the summer season. The Regatta has a reputation for embodying all things British, from picnics and Pimm’s on the riverbank to boater hats and blazers in the Stewards’ Enclosure.

Although the Regatta itself does not impose a dress code, those invited to the exclusive Stewards’ Enclosure must adhere to long-standing traditions which stipulate that gentlemen must wear jackets and ties whilst ladies’ skirts and dresses must cover the knee. Brightly coloured, striped blazers, Panama hats and boat shoes are the outfits of choice for discerning chaps, highlighting the importance of convention which allows the event to remain a true British institution.
