The Winter Edit
Battling snow, wind and rain might not be much fun, but the arrival of winter does wonders for your wardrobe! After all, what better excuse is there than freezing temperatures to wrap up in luxurious fabrics like cashmere and lambswool, or in a dreamy, duvet-like quilted jacket? Gone are the airy-fairy, floaty styles of summer and in their place are sumptuously soft knits, catwalk-worthy coats, rugged boots and a plethora of accessories to complete the look...and we can't get enough of it!
While the new season is a great reason to update your wardrobe and invest in some quality pieces, it can also be difficult to achieve the perfect balance between comfort and style. Because, when the mercury drops, it's increasingly tempting to dress purely for comfort, with current trends and must-have looks falling tragically by the wayside...
If this scenario sounds all too familiar, fear not. We've trawled through the key trends for AW/14 to bring you a selection of on-point style picks which combine comfort and practicality with killer style. For her, for him and for kids, we have this season's key trends covered in today's journal.
Simply sparkling: Winter and the Christmas season are the perfect times to indulge in a bit of sparkly embellishment. Think knitwear decorated with shimmering jewels and bold jewellery which steals the show in any setting. We love the Day Birger Ladies' Night Banquet Bracelet in Gold for party-worthy sparkle, while the stunning Ted Baker Halie Embellished Sweater in Natural is the perfect cover up for Christmas day.
Military chic: When it comes to on-trend winter jackets, the Farhi by Nicole Farhi Ladies' Twill Melton Pea Coat in Khaki is hard to beat. Nailing both the green and military trends in one, this is an incredible piece of outerwear crafted from wool and polyamide for the ultimate in comfort. Its double breasted front and structured cut give the coat a masculine yet elegant look, while the shearling collar provides just the right amount of warmth on chilly days.
Caped crusaders: That said, if you're looking for something a little different than a traditional winter coat this year, why not consider a cape? The cape has been given a thoroughly modern makeover for AW/14 and has been seen on the catwalks of Ralph Lauren, Elie Saab and Burberry Prorsum. Slightly more affordable is this divine Johnstons cape, which is made from a sumptuously soft blend of Merino and Angora wool and features a flirty, feminine frill.
Boot-iful: Finally, no winter wardrobe is complete without a good pair of boots to keep toes toasty. Like every year, there are some fantastic sturdy snow boots around which are ideal for icy roads and apres ski, but for this edit, we're choosing the all-together-more-sophisticated Navy Tall Leather Boots by Jil Sander. This knee-high boot has a sleek shape for a clean silhouette and is crafted from pure calfskin leather for a luxurious texture. A timeless classic which will never date, these stunning boots can be worn with leggings, skinny jeans and skirts, looking equally fabulous with each.
The roll neck: A menswear classic, the roll neck is back for AW/14. Perfect for creating a suave and debonair look in an instant, the roll neck sweater comes with the added benefit that it's warm. Chunky, cable knit, roll neck jumpers are perfect for a relaxed day time look, but for evening or more formal occasions, try a fine knit roll neck beneath a blazer. For us, this Victorinox Men's Mock Polo is the perfect balance between smart and casual.
Slim-fit trousers: Leave the loose, we-can-see-your-undies pants to the teenagers and invest in a pair of sophisticated slim-fit trousers this season. These Sebago Chinos are a simple and classic trouser which can be worn with anything and have a great cut. Extra brownie points if your slim-fit slacks are cropped and paired with an oversized sweater!
Bold and beautiful bags: If you're travelling to see friends and family this winter there's only one way to carry your belongings, and that's in a big, bold, boxy bag. The beauty of this trend is that it's stylish and practical. Made from pure leather, the Vivienne Westwood Men's Leather Weekender Bag is robust yet refined, and with a large central compartment and detachable shoulder strap is a dream to take on weekends away.
Quality quilts: Warm, comforting and comfortable, quilted jackets are the perfect way to keep out the cold during a frosty winter. This season's quilts are a more refined take on the puffa jacket, with an element of sophistication and a touch more style. Following their foray into clothing, Aigle have created the stylish Men's Fleck Quilted Jacket, which with a sumptuous down filling is more than a touch luxurious.
Durable dress boots: Sturdy yet stylish boots are a must during winter, and these Barbour Heritage Men's Marshall Derby Brogue Boot combine a robust construction with an elegant brogue design. A leather and fabric upper gives a comfortable fit while a Goodyear welted construction and rubber commando sole makes the boots incredibly durable and ideal for slushy winter streets!
Sorted in Sorel: We've all known the excitement of pulling back the curtains as a child to see the garden blanketed in crisp white snow. Kids love to play in the white slushy stuff, and who can blame them? While building a snowman of mammoth proportions is at the front of their minds, no doubt keeping them warm is at the front of yours. The Sorel Kids' Youth Caribou Boots will keep little feet toasty warm for hours on end thanks to their felt insulation, bonded frost plug and leather and Sherpa pile outer. Plus, a vulcanised rubber shell means water won't seep in when the snow starts to melt.
A go-to gilet: For girly-girls who love pink, the Joules Girls' Aire Gilet will go down a treat this cold season! With a Sherpa fleece lining, this gilet provides superb insulation for hours of outdoor play while the detachable hood allows assertive little ladies to change up their look in a flash.
The printed polo: Long sleeved polo shirts are the ideal midlayer for winter, providing an extra layer of warmth without being stifling. Inject some colour and vitality into the winter landscape, with bold polo shirts by Hackett and Joules.
Down-filled delights: For little skiers, a heavy-duty jacket with an impressive specification is the order of the day! Versatile enough to be worn in the freezing city as well as on the slopes, the Canada Goose Youth Rundle Bomber Jacket has a sumptuous duck down filling and a removable coyote fur trim for truly luxurious warmth!
