LC:M AW/15: Celebrating the Best of British Menswear
Bondage trousers, brogues, the bowler hat, tweed and trench coats; what do these world-famous fashion creations have in common? They are all confirmed as having originated in Great Britain. These shining examples of sartorial splendour suggest to many that the Britain is indeed, the birthplace of modern men's fashion.
It should come as little surprise then, that the British Fashion Council would hold an annual event celebrating the best of British menswear (while also taking a look at some of the best international designers in the field).
Friday 9th January saw the launch of this year's London Collections: Men, (or LC:M for short), for the AW/15 season. Dubbed a celebration of the "creative and commercial importance" of British brands in the global menswear market, this four day event is a blur of cool catwalk shows, artsy installations and A-list after parties.
More than 30 catwalk shows took place over the course of the event, by some of the most respected and renowned names in British menswear, (many of whom can be found at Country Attire), including Aquascutum, Hackett, Barbour, John Smedley and Belstaff. Other brands chose to display their collections in their own designer showrooms, in three separate venues dotted around the city. The annual event is also an opportunity to showcase the best of Britain's relatively unknown, but up-and-coming, design talent.
With the UK menswear market growing rapidly, now is the ideal time for a fashion industry focus on male clothing. According to global market research company Mintel, the UK menswear market grew 18% between 2008 and 2013, when sales reached a staggering £12.9 billion. And the rising popularity of British menswear shows no signs of slowing down; Mintel predict sales of British-brand menswear will reach £19 billion by the year 2019.
Here at Country Attire, we've been inspired by the creativity and quality on show at this year's LC:M. For today's journal, we've selected some of our most stylish menswear pieces by some of the biggest British brands showcased at the event, all of which are perfect for creating a timeless yet on-trend look this autumn/winter.
These Belstaff jeans are incredibly versatile, can be worn with almost anything, and in a classic black are a smarter alternative to blue denim jeans. For the ultimate country gent look, just pair the Barbour Corbridge jacket with the Merino Cashmere Modern Tartan scarf.
There are two clear choices when it comes to outerwear; classic or contemporary. This minimalist Belstaff leather jacket has clean lines and a simple design but is still full of attitude, while the classic Aquascutum raincoat oozes sophistication. A simple black roll neck sweater looks great worn with either.
