Cool Britannia!

CaptureWith the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards taking place last month, the Oscars on the horizon at the end of February and the BAFTAs happening just last night, awards season is well and truly under way!

Recent years have seen the meteoric rise of a number of British stars in Hollywood, and their dominance of the silver screen shows no signs of abating.

While established favourites like Jude Law, Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom continue to grace our screens regularly, a slew of young(ish!) British talent is currently stealing the show, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Jamie Dornan, Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike, Jack O'Connell, Natalie Dormer,  Emma Watson and current man-of-the-moment Eddie Redmayne.

Eton-educated Redmayne is the latest in an ever-growing line of fresh-faced British stars to capture Hollywood's heart. Having shot to fame playing Marius Pontmercy in 2012's Les Miserables, Redmayne reached the pinnacle of his career this month, scooping a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild award and a BAFTA for his moving portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Redmayne's on-screen wife in The Theory of Everything, actress Felicity Jones, has also not gone unnoticed. This English rose was nominated for Golden Globe and Critic's Choice awards in the category of Best Actress, and both Jones and Redmayne are nominees in the upcoming Academy Awards.

And it's not just on the big screen that the UK is excelling right now. In music too, British stars are garnering rave reviews and scaling the heights of the US music charts, the likes of which have rarely been seen since the 'British Invasion' of the 1960s.

Leading the way are male solo artists Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, who have occupied the number one spot in the US singles and album charts, respectively. Smith also cleaned up at this month's Grammy Awards, taking home four prizes including the prestigious Record of the Year and Song of the Year awards. His impressive win comes three years after British superstar Adele took home a record-breaking six Grammy awards. British bands Bastille and Coldplay were also nominated.

With so many British stars of sound and screen riding high in the industry, it comes as little surprise that British designers too are enjoying a red carpet resurgence. BAFTA winning actress Julianne Moore wore a stunning, scarlet Tom Ford dress to accept her award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Hollywood A-Lister Reese Witherspoon wowed in a rich purple Stella McCartney gown complete with plunging neckline.

At Country Attire, we've long celebrated the best of British. Whether it be British designers, brands, materials or manufacturing. British labels are a mainstay of our brand portfolio, and we're lucky enough to stock some of the country's best known and loved brands, including Barbour, Aquascutum, John Smedley, Aspinal of LondonJoules, Johnstons, Ted Baker, Stella McCartney Lingerie and Vivienne Westwood.
