Hero Product: Canada Goose Expedition Parka
Canadian outerwear specialist Canada Goose has been creating innovative jackets fit for the coldest climates on earth, since the company was founded back in 1957. Today, Canada Goose jackets are worn by everyone from Arctic explorers to the Hollywood A-List, and recognised the world over for their quality and style.
The Expedition Parka is one of Canada Goose's most iconic jackets, and with good reason. Originally developed to be worn by scientists in research facilities at the McMurdo station in Antarctica, this is an extraordinary jacket unparalleled in both looks and performance.
Effortlessly combining functionality with style, the Expedition Parka is without doubt a stand-out jacket of the Canada Goose collection. Read on to discover the features which make this jacket one of the best in the world...
1. Coyote fur ruff to the hood
Canada Goose use real fur in many of their jackets as fur does not freeze, is water-resistant and offers the kind of warmth needed for Arctic conditions. Fur has been used for centuries to provide protection from the cold, and in extreme temperatures where frostbite can occur rapidly this kind of insulation is a necessity, say Canada Goose. The Expedition Parka features a coyote fur ruff around the hood and it serves a very real purpose, as the brand explain: "Our jackets are built for the coldest places on Earth - places where skin around the face can freeze in an instant. In these environments, fur is not just the best choice, but the only choice. Fur trim around a hood works to disrupt airflow and create turbulent (warm air), which protects the face from frostbite." Canada Goose are committed to sourcing their fur only from certified Canadian trappers, and ensure that the fur they use has come from an animal that is not endangered and that has been captured humanely.
2. High-pile, fleece-lined chin guard
In freezing temperatures, it's likely you'll want to zip your jacket fully up to the chin. For this reason, the Expedition Parka features a high-pile fleece-lined chin guard which is soft against the delicate skin of the face and prevents irritation, so you can burrow down into the jacket as much as you like!
3. Multiple pockets for exceptional storage
The Expedition Parka boasts an astonishing 11 pockets in total, giving exceptional storage and additional insulation for the hands. The two upper chest pockets and two lower full-bellow snow pockets can all be secured using the Velcro flaps, while inside the jacket has two concealed pockets for valuables. The Expedition Parka also boasts four fleece-lined and zip-fastening handwarmer pockets which are carefully hidden behind the chest and lower pockets to maintain a clean and minimal aesthetic.
4. 2-way locking zipper with storm flap
A two-way YKK zipper is protected by a storm flap with Velcro flaps. This robust fastening system keeps cold winds out.
5. Utility pockets on the sleeve
The multiple pockets on the Expedition Parka are strategically positioned to allow easy access to essential items. The utility pocket and flap pocket on the left and right sleeves allow instant access to must-have items.
6. Recessed, heavy-duty, rib-knit cuffs
On many jackets, wide sleeves allow cold air to creep in. To prevent this happening, the Expedition Parka has been made with recessed rib-knit cuffs which fit snugly around the wrists, while the wider jacket sleeve sits around the outside.
7. Elasticized nylon snow skirt
Every aspect of the Expedition Parka is designed to ensure the warmest possible fit. That's why it has been given an integrated elasticized nylon snow skirt to stop freezing winds and cold draughts penetrating. The elasticized snow skirt sits snugly at the bottom of the jacket, creating a seal around the bottom of the jacket to keep body heat in and cold out.
Fit for the coldest conditions...
Level 5 Thermal Experience Index rating
"Field-tested for the coldest places on earth", the Expedition Parka has a Thermal Experience Index rating of 5, making it one of Canada Goose's warmest jackets and suitable for wear in temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius. The jacket outer is constructed from Arctic Tech fabric -Canada Goose's most proven textile which stays dry in extreme conditions- repelling snow and water while keeping you warm.
625 Fill Power white duck down insulation
Inside, the Expedition Parka is stuffed with sumptuous 625 Fill Power white duck down. "Fill Power" is a measure of the loft, (the fluffiness) of a down product. The higher the fill power, the more air an ounce of the down can trap and the more insulating it is. Canada Goose use Hutterite down -amongst others- to fill their jackets, as it retains more warm air than other types of down and allows a lighter weight jacket to be made. Hutterite is amongst the most premium Canadian down available and gives the jacket a luxuriously thick and fluffy feeling that synthetic fibres cannot achieve, providing up to three times the warmth of man-made insulating materials. Canada Goose source all their down from Canadian suppliers and has been a member of the Down Association of Canada for more than 30 years.
