Grand National Glam
Watched by more than 600 million people worldwide in 2014, the Grand National is one of the world's most famous and captivating horse racing events. Last year, the prize money reached a record figure of £1 million, and this year's event looks set to be the biggest yet.
The Grand National 2015 kicks off on Thursday 9th April at Liverpool's famous Aintree race course, followed by Ladies' Day on Friday 10th April. The meeting culminates in the main event, held on the afternoon of Saturday 11th April, with an estimated £300 million placed in bets over the course of the event.
For many racegoers, the Grand National is an opportunity to pull out the sartorial stops. While the race itself does not have an official dress code, smart dress is encouraged, and certain types of clothing are not permitted. The emphasis on formal occasion wear is positively embraced by most racegoers; Aintree is often awash with incredible hats which wouldn't be out of place at a wedding, and for many ladies, the higher the heel the better! Suits, shirts and ties are the order of the day for gentlemen racegoers.
If you're heading to Aintree this weekend and are unsure of what to wear, fear not. In today's journal, we bring you two ready-made outfits for him and her which exude elegance with a contemporary edge. Read on to discover our Grand National glam picks...
A smart pencil dress is the perfect option for ladies heading to Aintree this week. With an elegant neckline and pretty capped sleeves, the Ted Baker Catina dress is a flattering and feminine option for race day, while the stunning floral print adds colour and stops the dress being stuffy. A striking print like this can be paired with simple accessories. The Vivienne Westwood Maggie III court shoes are glamorous and offer additional height while still being comfortable, and race day essentials can be stored in a chic clutch like the Vivienne Westwood Ladies' Pelle Vitello. Finish your look with a pair of chic and glamorous shades, like these Half Moon sunglasses by Linda Farrow.
Sports wear and fancy dress are a no-no at the National, and like the ladies, gentlemen racegoers are encouraged to dress smartly. A simple shirt, tie and blazer is a timeless combination which will fit in effortlessly and is understated yet stylish. We love the classic pairing of these beige Stuart chinos by Scotch & Soda, with a crisp white Fred Perry shirt from the Reissues collection, and navy Ted Baker blazer. Add fun and personality to your look with striking cufflinks or a vibrant bow-tie, like this one by Duchamp.
