Harsh winter conditions can be especially tough on your skin, so we have compiled the ultimate no-nonsense men’s winter skincare regimen in order to combat dry, oily skin.
With chilling temperatures outside and the blast of central heating inside, harsh winter climates, fluctuating temperatures in addition to any pollutants can be especially tough on your skin – causing unwanted dryness, redness and irritation throughout the winter months. This winter, combat the sub-zero weather and protect your skin by following this simple, no-nonsense skincare regimen designed specifically for men’s skin.
Step 1. Cleanse
Using a cleanser or face wash in the morning and evening will help to refresh the skin and remove any excess oil, pollutants and dirt, which if left unchecked can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. In winter, it’s best to stick to a cleanser that is alcohol and soap-free as this can cause excessive drying on already sensitive skin. A cream-based cleanser will help to provide much-needed hydration, whilst ingredients such as Vitamin E or Aloe Vera will provide extra nourishment. As men’s skin tends to be oiler – especially in winter, make sure to cleanse your skin for at least 60 seconds, both morning and night.
- Use a cream-based cleanser/ face wash for hydration
- Avoid cleansers containing alcohol
- Look for skin nourishing ingredients such as Vitamin E or Aloe Vera
- Use morning and night for 60 seconds
Our Recommendation: Baxter of California Daily Facial Cleanser
Step 2. Tone
Toners remove any excess oils left behind as well as dead skin cells, helping to keep your complexion clear and bright throughout the winter months by regulating sebum production. Toners containing ingredients such as Salicylic Acid and Vitamin E will absorb excess oils, without completely stripping the skin of what it needs to prevent dryness. Ingredients such as Cucumber, Mint, Green Tea or Witch Hazel extracts will also soothe winter-battered skin and reduce redness. Simply apply toner to a cotton pad and swipe across your face after cleansing, paying particular attention to the forehead, nose and chin.
- Toners tighten pores and regulate sebum production
- Look for active ingredients such as Salicylic Acid, Vitamin E and Allantoin
- Botanical extracts such as Cucumber, Mint and Witch Hazel soothe skin & reduce redness
- Apply daily after cleansing, paying attention to T-zone areas
Our recommendation: Baxter of California Herbal Mint Toner
Step 3. Apply Serums
Filled with skin-loving ingredients and powerful concentrates, serums can supercharge your skincare routine and help combat the effects of winter weather. To fight excessive oiliness, look for a skin serum containing BHAs (Beta-hydroxy acids) such as Salicylic Acid to actively break down oils, unclog pores and visibly reduce any imperfections. If the winter weather is causing your skin to dry out, look for oil-based serums to rehydrate and replenish your skin. Serums containing caffeine and vitamin E can also help to reduce fine lines and calm irritated skin. Apply serums to your skin in the evening before moisturising.
- Serums contain concentrated ingredients to combat your winter skincare worries
- BHA serums will actively break down oils and clear blackheads for a visibly clearer complexion
- Oil-based serums will provide hydration and nourishment to dry skin
- Apply nightly before your moisturiser
Our recommendation: Baxter of California Skin Concentrate BHA
Step 4. Moisturise
Fluctuating temperatures, low humidity and irritation caused by shaving will quickly dry out your skin during the winter months, moisturisers help to maintain the skin’s moisture barrier and deliver much-needed hydration. A moisturiser containing active ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera or Caffeine will provide your skin with a much-needed boost and long-lasting hydration. Also, oil-free and non-comedogenic moisturisers will not clog pores or leave behind a greasy residue, resulting in a clearer, fresher-feeling complexion. Apply moisturiser both morning and night after any face serums.
- Use a heavier moisturiser in winter for added hydration
- Look for ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid or Aloe Vera
- Apply morning and night after any serums to lock in the formulas
Our Recommendation: Baxter of California Oil Free Moisturiser
Step 5. Apply Eye Cream
Men typically notice the first signs of ageing around the eye area. Due to the area’s delicate nature, dark circles, dull skin, puffiness and fine lines are commonplace, but a concentrated eye cream can help to tackle these skin concerns. Eye creams containing Hyaluronic Acid deliver intense hydration whilst active ingredients such as Caffeine or Vitamin E can help to reduce puffiness, dark circles and condition the skin. After moisturising, apply eye cream each evening, gently patting in the formula around the socket using your little finger.
- Eye creams help to reduce puffiness, dark circles and tired-looking skin
- Eye creams containing Hyaluronic Acid deliver intense hydration
- Ingredients such as Caffeine reduce puffiness and dark circles
Our recommendation: Baxter of California Under Eye Complex
Step 6. Exfoliate Weekly
Due to excessive skin dryness caused by winter weather, it is worth incorporating a facial scrub into your skincare regimen. A facial scrub will gently buff away any dead skin cells and other debris, revealing brighter, smoother looking skin and also prevent in-grown hairs. Avoid scrubs containing synthetic microbeads and instead, opt for those with natural exfoliants such as seeds or ground shell powders. Exfoliate once or twice weekly after cleansing, as over-exfoliating can strip the skin of essential oils.
